JAG PA Students Visit the State Capitol for Legislative Day

Connecting Youth Voices to State Leadership

Students from Holy Cross Catholic School, St. Raymond of Penafort Catholic School, Insight PA Cyber Charter School, and the JAG After School Program at New Covenant Church of Philadelphia had an unforgettable experience at the Pennsylvania State Capitol during JAG PA Legislative Day.

The purpose of this annual trip was to give students a firsthand look at how state government operates while encouraging them to engage with their elected officials. Students came prepared with thoughtful questions and concerns about issues impacting their communities, including public transportation, school funding, and the condition of local parks.

During their conversations, state representatives offered real-time responses and shared actionable steps that students could take to be part of the solution. The visit also served to introduce students to potential careers in public service and inspire them to see government as a pathway for positive change.

A Day of Learning, Leadership, and Inspiration

The day’s highlights included a guided tour of the Capitol Building, lunch inside the Capitol, and a special recognition and group photo on the House of Representatives floor. Students met with several state legislators, including Representatives Anthony Bellmon, Keith Harris, Sean Dougherty, Darisha K. Parker, Jared G. Solomon, and Melissa Cerrato, each of whom took time to speak with the students about leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement.

Perhaps the most memorable moment came when students were invited into the office of Speaker Joanna McClinton. To their surprise, Speaker McClinton entered the room during their visit, warmly greeting the students and taking time to answer their questions about her role and experiences as Pennsylvania’s first female Speaker of the House. She then personally escorted the group to take a commemorative photo — a moment that left a lasting impression on everyone.

Empowering Future Leaders

JAG PA Legislative Day provided students with more than just a tour — it gave them a voice. Through this experience, students saw how their perspectives matter and how government decisions directly affect their lives. The event reinforced JAG PA’s mission to help young people achieve success in school, work, and life through career exploration, civic awareness, and leadership development.
